EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Authorities say an El Paso hospital is under its second security lockdown this year while it treats a patient injured in a shootout in violence-plagued Mexico.
El Paso County sheriff's Deputy Jesus Tovar says an unidentified person was being treated Friday for gunshot wounds.
The incident took place in Casas Grandes, Mexico, about 140 miles from the border. Tovar says authorities believe it involved powerful and violent Mexican drug cartels.
Mexico's drug violence has come into Texas again.
It's in Texas daily.
Yes and Texans know it. I guess I should have been more clear. That statement is for anyone who underestimates how much we are affected by what goes on and comes across the border from Mexico.
I agree, its amazing that what happened in Nuevo Laredo, and what is happening right now in Ciudad Juarez, doesn't get more press attention in the U.S.
There was a time that if I travelled to a Texas border town I loved to go across the border for some shopping in the mercados. I'm too scared to do that now.
Another amazing AmazingSDJ story from the border. I think I am the only person that has never been to Mexico, been almost every other country in the world. Sounds like a rather violent place to me.
Sadly, Mexico is the only other country that I've ever been to. And I didn't even get to the pretty, tourist places like Cozumel. I've just been across the border to the run down little towns like Juarez, Matamoros and Acuna. (actually, Juarez is a run down city, not a little town.) With the violence like it is now, I doubt I'll ever go back.
In my old job of International Satellite Communications, it was exciting in alot of ways as I did get the "grand world tour" as there are not too many places that don't have a International Satellite System, however it did get a little old after a while and the actual locations of where I went to in those countries for the most part, were not exactly the tourist spots. Most were out in the middle of no where...I have always wanted to visit Mexico. Most of the time that stories I hear about are from La Paz & Puerto Vallarta as those flights are pretty cheap from Seattle and of course Cozumel. I have heard lots of Juarez, most of its was not the worlds best......
Lets see on my master list of places I have Not Been to, well....there is not a heck of alot of them...I am sure I missed a few of them, but these are the major ones....
Burkina Faso
Algeria
Cameroon
Chile
Oman
Yemen
Wow! I'm jealous. I'd settle for a "simple" trip to Europe, maybe London or Seville.
After awhile, all those airports and hotels kinda look really familiar....I think New Zealand and Prague or Saint Petersburg were my favorites, just beautiful places and neat people also.
Now you're just rubbing it in! Cruel man.
I just hated it the whole time, it was terrible, I would never recommend it to anyone. :-)
I would be willing to put up with a few indistinguishable airports and hotels in order to see more of this world. I have a list that goes beyond London and Seville, those are just the first two.
Yeah....I only have about 200 photos of Seville cathedral's and other nice sites in that town.....another favorite spot however..I guess that could be called "rubbing it in"
However somebody did call me paw paw a few times also..

Totally rubbing it in. I've wanted to go to Spain (Seville, Barcelona, Castellon) since the 1992 Olympics. I could see the beautiful countryside in the background and was just captivated.
However somebody did call me paw paw a few times also..
Don't you go blaming me for that. I specifically said it was creepy to call you Paw Paw.

LOL-- while you haven't been to Mexico, you've been to more places than most people I know! And-- those are pretty "exotic"-- how many Americans have been to any of them?
P.S. There are part of Mexico that are quite safe (I think areas near the U.S. border are the most violent-- as is northern Baja.). But-- Mexico is one of the most corrupt countries I've been to-- its amazing the degree to which this exists. (Some hotels search their staff every time they leave work-- to check for stolen items).
We had a Olympics there ? Wow...I never knew that..
Weird...So guy was trying to tell me that he even got his picture with Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Larry Bird & Sarah Brightman at the Opening ceremony on July 25th and almost ended up with some King dude named Carlos or something like that and the USA pulled off 108 medals. Man that was one Amazing story. Some guy that did the satellite uplink for Intelsat for Spain. Interesting.....
Yeah that Paw Paw thingy was a little weird for me too also, I am really not that old...or at least I don't act it, I hope...
Americans are weird (except of course Texans...) they go to Europe, visit Paris (endless traffic jams, snotty people) London, Heidelberg and never ever see Spain...They miss some of the best parts of Europe..
LOL-- while you haven't been to Mexico, you've been to more places than most people I know!
Yes, Travelin' Tedd is quite the international man of mystery. With every post on Newsvine he gives us something new to ponder the question "Just who IS this Tedd Riggs?"

I would like to see Mexico City and tour the area where agaves are grown for tequila production. I also wouldn't mind a little time on the beach down South on the coast!
@krishna-167929
Corrupt ?
Hah...
Try these
Armenia
Andorra
Haiti
Kyrgyzstan
Swaziland
"Just who IS this Tedd Riggs?"
just some little old Newsviner :-)
I'll let you know who I am, once I sort thru all my photos so I can remember...
How did you like Travelin' Tedd? Much better than Paw Paw, no?

Is there nothing that you haven't done? I'm more jealous by the moment.
That was a pretty cool trip I have to admit. Doing the Olympics Coverages were always something I loved to do and that one was pretty special to me as I was involved with it so much and it was my first really big project, so that is one I will not forget.
Few things I have not done. But I did get to install Sir Arthur's Clarke Earth Station, he was somewhat my inspiration in many ways as I am a Sci-Fi nut and he did pretty much create the field I work in.
Same with Jacques-Yves Cousteau, I designed the shipboard Earth Station and we installed the first one on Calypso 1 and I got to meet him and crew, so that was one of my other "dreams".
Yes Travelin' Tedd is way better....
Do you have pictures of all of this? That would be something I would love to see. If I didn't die of jealously in the process...
Of course there are drugs and violence in Mexico; it's where the Rockefeller Revolution has the roots of a Green Revolution. It is the site of the coronation of the a like minded scientists into a political gem for the promotion of petrochemiucals with biotech. Politics becomes a Nobel Scientist.
Norman Bourlag is the poster boy for a political policy of corporatization of the food supply. He runs the USAID effort for the export of patented seeds. Nothing is better than evergreen revenue and these are seeds that give profits forever.
Now Mexican farmers can't sell local maize because NAFTA has assured Monsanto can dump subsidized gmo varieties on their market. Displaced and hungry families grow desperate.
A war on Drugs sets aside billions for herbicide spraying that ensures nothing but Monsanto crops will survive. The problem is created with tax dollars and the crooks laugh all the way to the bank.

Mexico City is a must-- worth spending some time there. Don't miss the Museo Nacional de AntropologĂa de MĂ©xico-- one of the best museums of its type in the world. There are different coasts-- Atlantic...and down south Pacific and Yucatan. (Yucatan has amazing Mayan ruins, and popular tourist beaches. The people are mainly Mayans...). Cabo San Lucas is sort of an "in" place-- but more expensive then the rest of Mexico...also much less of interest to see. You might want to go to Puerto Vallarta....same latitude as Hawaii, jungles, tropical, (Night of the Iguana was filmed there). Interesting town, nice beaches. Also a short ride to Tequila country. Much less crowded-- but very hot-- in the summer.
Sounds like you've got a bit of the world traveler in you as well. I need a vacation after just reading your post.
Much less crowded-- but very hot-- in the summer.
I'm from Texas. I can handle hot.
and yes...I have pics....
I'm from Texas. I can handle hot.
Ironically, Mexico in the summer is a good place to escape the heat-- if you stay in the mountains-- or even the high central plateau where Mexico city is. The coast are lower of course-- so they can get very hot...and humid. One of theings that fascinate me about Mexico is the variety-- in some ways its like severakl different countries in different areas. A nice trip might be: a few days in Mexico City & vicinity-- then a bus ride to Puerto Vallarta.
Mexico is the variety
Thats what I find so special about New Zealand also.
